12 theoretical lessons of 2 hours each (total of 24 hours) and 15 in-car sessions of 55 minutes each. Dive in! Here you’ll find all the details of the 4 main steps to getting your license!

It will take you approximately 13 months to obtain your probationary license.

Course details

With a learner's license you’ll finally be able to drive a car, but you must always be accompanied by a person who has had their "regular" driver's license for at least 2 years. Just 12 months after earning your learner's license, you’ll be eligible to take the test to earn your probationary license.

How to earn your leaner's license

Enroll in the driving course offered at the Tecnic school closest to you. Take the mandatory theoretical courses of Phase 1 of the Road Safety Education Program, which consists of five 2-hour modules, the last of which is an evaluation. Phase 1 lasts a minimum of 28 days. As soon as you pass the theoretical exam at Tecnic, you will be given a certificate with the word “Passed”. Go to the SAAQ to take a vision test and obtain your learner’s license. You will need to present the following documents:

  • Your birth certificate issued by the Québec register of civil status or your passport.
  • Your health insurance card.
  • Written authorization from your parents (for those under the age of18).
  • Your Tecnic driving school certificate (certifying that you have completed Phase 1).
Permanent resident card or citizenship certificate with photo

You will also need to provide the required amount to pay the license fee.

Learner’s license essentials

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • When driving, you must always be accompanied by a person who has held a regular license for at least 2 years.
  • Zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs while driving.
If you accumulate 4 or more demerit points you will lose your learner’s license.
  • You can only drive in the province of Quebec.
  • Your learner’s license will be valid for 18 months but can be renewed for an additional 12 months.

After you’ve had your learner’s license for 12 months, you may take the practical test at the SAAQ to obtain your probationary license. With this license, you’ll be able to drive by yourself!

How to obtain your probationary license

Take phases 2 to 4 of the mandatory theoretical courses of the Road Safety Education Program, alternating with on-road driving sessions.

Phase 2 (Guided driving) — 28 days minimum: Invite the person accompanying you to review module 6.

Phase 3 (Semi-guided driving) — 56 days minimum: You will have two formative practical evaluations on outings 5 and 10. Leave a few weeks between phases 3 and 4 to give yourself some driving time with your companion.

Phase 4 (Semi-directed to autonomous driving) — 56 days minimum: It’s possible to complete module 12 before the end of the 10 months of having your learner’s license. Then take your theoretical exam at the SAAQ. Outings 12 and 13 must be combined to constitute a 2-hour practice with 2 apprentice drivers in the vehicle. Each apprentice takes turns as the observer and the driver. Outing 15 is a formative evaluation and summary of instruction prior to the road test. This must be done at the very end of the program.

Take your road test at the SAAQ. Once you have passed your driving test, you will receive your probationary license right away.

Probationary license essentials:

  • You must have your learner's license for at least 12 months.
  • Present written authorization from your parents (for those under 18).
  • Present your driving course certificate indicating a status of "Passed".
  • Zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs while driving.
  • If you accumulate 4 or more demerit points you will lose your license.
