Important things to consider before you head off on a road trip with your moped
Now that summer’s here and the holidays are just around the corner, what could be easier than imagining yourself zipping around on a scooter? Maybe you’ve even got a scooter all of your own! In any case, there are a certain number of rules you must comply with before taking to the road on a moped!
-
Have a valid driver’s license. As of the age of 14, you can obtain a driver’s license, contingent on having successfully completed your driving course and passed the SAAQ knowledge test. The moped course is composed of three hours of theoretical knowledge and three hours of practice. Click here to register online.
The course is designed to not only teach you how to ride a moped but also, to help you learn certain rules of the road. In other words, we’ll help you understand the behaviour of other road users and allow the latter to understand your behaviour when you’re on a scooter. Ultimately, it’s all about preventing accidents
- Register your moped. According to the Code, a moped or scooter is a passenger vehicle having 2 or 3 wheels, equipped with an electric motor or a motor having a cylinder capacity of not more than 50 cc with an automatic transmission and having a maximum speed of 70 km/h. Registering your moped or scooter is mandatory (so that the SAAQ knows who owns it) and the associated fees must be paid each year.

Abide by the rules. If you plan to drive on the road, you implicitly agree to comply with the provisions of the Highway Safety Code. Among other rules, you are not allowed to have a passenger on your moped if you are less than 16 years old. Wearing a motorcycle helmet that complies with the applicable regulation and protects the eyes is mandatory.
And while it can be soooo tempting to do so, modifying a scooter is illegal. The owner of a scooter that can go more than 70 km/h, has an overly noisy muffler or whose lights fail to function as they should, can receive a fine and even have his moped seized by the authorities.
