What is the Quebec Motorcycle Learner's Permit (6R permit)?
The 6R permit is a temporary license issued by the SAAQ (Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec), which allows you to drive a motorcycle under the supervision of an instructor during practical courses.
This is the first step in a motorcycle driving course. It is therefore essential before obtaining a full Class 6A, 6B or 6C motorcycle license.
6R Motorcycle Learner's Permit Restrictions
As a learner's permit, the 6R license has restrictions that are very specific to Quebec, including:
Driving restricted to the driving course
- Holders of a 6R learner's permit are authorized to drive a motorcycle only as part of a driving course recognized by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). This includes closed-circuit sessions and road outings scheduled as part of the training program.
Prohibition on carrying passengers
- Holders of a 6R license are prohibited from carrying passengers on their motorcycles.
Permit validity
- The 6R license is valid for 18 months. During this period, the learner must complete his or her training and pass the tests required to obtain a Class 6A, 6B or 6C license.
Why Get a 6R License?
Learning to ride a motorcycle is not something you can improvise. This license is a prerequisite for acquiring the basics of safe driving. It comes with several advantages:
- Supervised learning: Training includes hours of theory and practice to ensure effective progress.
- Enhanced safety: Training emphasizes the best practices for safe driving.
- Progressive access to driving: This license allows you to familiarize yourself with motorcycling without pressure, before obtaining a higher-class license.
How Do I Get my 6R License in Quebec?
The learner's motorcycle permit (6R license) is obtained from the SAAQ, following successful completion of its theory test. It's important to know the eligibility conditions, the SAAQ requirements and the restrictions to be respected to start your apprenticeship with confidence.
1. Meet the Eligibility Requirements
Before starting your journey towards a motorcycle license, make sure you meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 16 years old (parental permission is required for under-18s).
- Not have had your license suspended or revoked in the last 2 years.
- Have less than 4 demerit points on your driving record.
2. Pass the SAAQ Knowledge Test
This exam tests your knowledge of the Highway Safety Code, road signs and safe motorcycle behavior. Note that if you already have your class 5 driver's license (automobile), the exam will focus on this SAAQ publication: Operating a motorcycle.
To pass, you'll need a minimum of 75% for the Highway Safety Code and Signs and Signals portion (if you don't have your Class 5 license) and 85% for the motorcycle-specific portion. To give yourself the best possible chance, it's advisable to complete the SAAQ road safety test.
3. Use the License for 18 Months
Once you've passed the test, you'll receive your motorcycle learner's permit, valid for 18 months. This permit has one important restriction: it only authorizes you to drive during supervised practical courses.
