Parallel parking is a maneuver that causes a lot of headaches, especially for new drivers. However, with the right method and a little practice, it's perfectly possible to parallel park with confidence and precision.

Tecnic, Quebec's leader in driver training, offers practical advice on how to parallel park like a pro.

What is Parallel Parking?

Parallel parking is a maneuver for parking your vehicle parallel to the curb, between two cars already parked. It's a technique that requires precision, good distance estimation and steering control.

Why is Mastering Parallel Parking so Important?

Parallel parking is an indispensable skill, especially in the city where parking spaces are scarce and streets are getting busier. You have to know how to take your place, and do it with confidence!

Then, during the SAAQ road test, this maneuver is systematically evaluated. So knowing how to parallel park with confidence will give you one less thing to worry about in preparation for that exam.

Key Steps to Successful Parallel Parking

Just follow the recipe below and your parallel parking will go off without a hitch.

1. Find a Suitable Space

First and foremost, make sure the space you choose is big enough for your vehicle. A good rule of thumb is to aim for a space about 1.5 times the length of your car.

If you're having trouble estimating the size of your car, don't worry! It's a skill that improves with time and practice. Start by practicing on a quiet street to familiarize yourself with your car's dimensions.

2. Position Yourself Correctly

Come to a complete stop parallel to the parked vehicle in front of the open space, at a distance of about 1 meter from the other car.

Overtake the other car slightly, so that the passenger-side mirror is aligned with that of the neighboring vehicle. Stop and engage the gearshift in reverse.

3. Turn the Steering Wheel all the Way to the Right

Activate the turn signal to signal your intention, then turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. Check your blind spots, then back up, keeping a close eye on where you're heading.

Tip for those who don't have a reversing camera: looking at the mirrors won't be enough! The SAAQ allows you to detach yourself to completely rotate your body backwards and better see where you're heading.

4. Straighten Your Wheels

When you reach an angle of about 45 degrees, turn the steering wheel so that your wheels are straight and continue backing slowly until your vehicle is almost in space.

5. Turn the Steering Wheel All the Way to the Left

Turn the steering wheel to the left and slowly back up to enter the space completely until the car is straight, aligned with the curb.

6. Adjust Yourself

Aim to finish about 30 cm from the curb, the final mark of successful parking. Not satisfied? Try again! There's nothing wrong with correcting parallel parking.

Parking too far away won't give you a demerit point, but it will put you at risk of a parking ticket!

Tips for Successful Parallel Parking

  • Practice regularly: Repetition is the best way to improve your technique and thwart fear of driving.
  • Use landmarks: Keep the rear-view mirror and your 45-degree angle in mind as reference points during your maneuver.
  • Correct yourself if necessary: It's not uncommon to have to adjust your position. Don't hesitate to try again. Practice makes perfect.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even with a good method, certain mistakes are common when parallel parking:

  • Not checking blind spots: Forgetting to check your mirrors or blind spots before you start parking can lead to fender-benders.
  • Getting too close to the curb: It's best to start again and adjust the vehicle's position if you get too close to the curb. Otherwise, your tires could suffer.
  • Lack of patience: Don't rush! A slow, controlled maneuver is the key to success.

Tips To Motorcycle Parallel Parking: What are the Special Features?

Parallel motorcycle parking is often simpler due to the smaller size of the motorcycle. However, it is essential to observe certain rules :

  • Stable positioning: Make sure the stand rests on a solid surface.
  • Angle of insertion: Park slightly diagonally to facilitate departure.
  • Visibility: Position your motorcycle so as to remain visible to other road users.
