The Process of Obtaining a Motorcycle License in Quebec
Here's how to get your motorcycle license in Quebec and how long to get it!
1. Eligibility for a Motorcycle License
First and foremost, you need to check that you are eligible to obtain a motorcycle license by meeting the criteria set by the SAAQ:
- You must be at least 16 years old to begin the process. If you're under 18, you'll also need authorization from your parents or legal guardian.
- You must not have had your license revoked or suspended in the last 2 years.
- You must have fewer than 4 demerit points on your driving record. That said, if you don't already have a probationary license or a class 1, 2, 3, 4A, 4B or 5 driver's license, you must not have any demerit points on your record.
Did you know? Unlike the scooter license, which is obtained by default for holders of a car license, the motorcycle license is a separate license.
2. Theory Test Preparation Course (optional)
Some schools offer an optional 3-hour motorcycle theory course, strongly encouraged to increase your chances of passing the SAAQ theory exam. This course covers the basics of motorcycle riding, the rules of the road, and the risks associated with driving this type of vehicle.
After deepening your knowledge, it is advisable to complete the SAAQ online test practice, in addition to the preparatory questions provided by your driving school, if applicable.
3. SAAQ Theory Test
To obtain your probationary license, you'll need to take a theory test at the SAAQ. This exam covers the Road Guide as well as the publication “Driving a Motorcycle”. Both are available in PDF format on the SAAQ website. There are a few special considerations:
- If you have a probationary license or a Class 5 (car) driver's license: all you need to do is take a motorcycle driving test.
- Otherwise: you'll take a test on the Highway Safety Code, road signs and motorcycle driving.
To pass, you must obtain a minimum score of 75% for the Highway Safety Code and Signs and Signals, and a minimum score of 85% in the motorcycle driving section. If you fail, you can retake the test within 28 days.
4. Learner's Permit (Class 6R)
If you pass, you'll receive your learner's permit (Class 6R). This permit allows you to drive a motorcycle, but only under the supervision of a qualified driving instructor.
This license is valid for 18 months, giving you enough time to complete your practical training.
5. Closed Circuit Practical Test
Now that you've got your learner's permit, it's time for the practical part! After a 3-hour theoretical preparation, you'll have to take four practical closed circuit motorcycle driving courses lasting a total of 16 hours.
These courses are designed to teach you the basic maneuvers involved in safe motorcycle riding: balance control, braking, cornering, etc.
6. Motorcycle Learner's Permit (Class 6A)
Once you've completed the course, and at least one month after obtaining your learner's permit (Class 6R), you'll need to take a closed circuit test at the SAAQ. This test includes slaloms, emergency braking and tight turns. Again, you'll need a minimum score of 75% to pass.
7. SAAQ Road Test
Once you've accumulated at least 11 months of on-road driving with your learner's permit, you can take the final step: passing the SAAQ road circuit test. This practical test is carried out on the road, in real traffic conditions. You'll be assessed on :
- Your ability to comply with the Highway Safety Code.
- Your ability to maneuver and anticipate hazards.
- Your control of the motorcycle and your position on the road.
If you pass, you'll receive your motorcycle driving license (Class 6A, 6B or 6C). Make sure you choose the right motorcycle for the license you wish to obtain:
- Class 6A (all motorcycles) : Displacement over 400 cm3
- Class 6B: Displacement from 126 cm3 to 400 cm3
- Class 6C: Displacement 125 cm3 or less
Now you're ready to ride freely on Quebec roads! Now all you have to do is find your first motorcycle!

The Motorcycle Learner's Permit Period (Class 6A) in Quebec
During the 11 months in which you must perfect your skills with your Class 6A learner's permit, several obligations must be met:
- Zero tolerance for alcohol consumption
- Mandatory curfew between midnight and 5 a.m.
- Prohibition on carrying a passenger
- 4-point demerit limit
Tecnic's Advice for a Successful Motorcycle Learner's Permit
- Practice regularly: once you've obtained your learner's permit, you have a compulsory 11-month period of practice. Take advantage of this time to drive regularly in a variety of conditions, whether in urban areas or on open roads, day or night. Repetition is the key to becoming a competent and confident driver. Your school will prepare you for the SAAQ exams by familiarizing you with the upcoming tests, so you'll know what to practice at home!
- Equip yourself well: invest in a quality helmet, gloves, a protective jacket and appropriate boots. Choosing the right equipment not only gives you better protection in the event of a fall, but also makes your rides more comfortable!
- Lessons aren't just for the test! : Even with your motorcycle license in your pocket, it doesn't necessarily mean you're the most comfortable rider on the road. That's why it's a good idea to opt for refresher courses when you need them, and we strongly advise you to do so.
The Price of a Motorcycle License in Quebec
The price of obtaining a motorcycle license in Quebec covers the course at an accredited school, all exam fees payable to the SAAQ, as well as license issuance fees.
